What's a Carbon Neutral Website?
Today I was e-mailed about a scholarship opportunity offered by an online business that was unrelated to the scholarship's field of study. A mattress company is giving away $1000 for the best essay on "The Unique Advantages of Living a Green Lifestyle & the Steps to Get There"...
"Weird", I thought. But I guess their mattresses are "some of the finest sustainably-produced, natural latex mattresses"...
Again, I think "weird"... I don't associate latex with being green, but maybe I just don't know. Regardless, I scroll down to the bottom of the website and see a banner that says "Carbon Neutral Website"...
So at this point I am extremely skeptical of this whole thing. So of course I go a layer deeper!
The banner seemed to be clickable when I moused over it but it wasn't. At this point my curiosity is palpable. I google "carbon neutral website" and find there is a website selling these banners for $25, $50, or $100. If you have a website that you want to get "certified" as carbon neutral, you self-identify as a $25, $50, or $100 customer by the number of visitors your website has each month and the type of hosting (shared, cloud, or dedicated).
A certification of $25 comes with a .PDF of the certificate, the banner, and a donation of 50% of that fee to a carbon neutral project of their choosing. Here's what they say regarding the fee:
First, we approximate the carbon emissions of your website based on its size. By choosing one of our three packages according to your needs we are able to categorize you effectively. 50% of Carbon Neutral Website revenues then go directly to hand-picked environmental causes. This includes donations to high quality renewable research and development, as well as tangible sustainable energy projects across the world. In return for your fee you also receive certification and support from our team, helping you show your green credentials to your customers.
There is no listing of the green, carbon neutral projects the fees go towards.
